Rolex 24 at Daytona Spotter Guides by Andy Blackmore

Great news! Andy Blackmore has just released the 2018 IMSA Spotter Guides ahead of the Rolex 24 hour race at Daytona this weekend.

You may download the guides on Andy’s web site spotterguides.com or on official IMSA site, or do like me and get a printed booklet at the paddock in Daytona International Speedway. It’s a great collectable.

I’m writing about this while sitting at the gate in Newark Liberty International Airport about to board my flight to Florida to volunteer this awesome event.

This post will be updated as information becomes more available closer to the event, which is due to take place January 28, 2017

I thought I’d never do Daytona again based on the fiasco last time turned into… but never say never. I am seriously considering the trip down for 2017 season opener of the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Series championship because of all the new machinery that is going to take part in this event.

As I’m sure everyone else is, I am eagerly awaiting the official Andy Blackmore spotter guide for this event to know exactly who will take part, but until then I will use this post to speculate on the entries as well as share news of those that have already been announced.

This season will see a brand new prototype platform, the DPi, or Daytona Prototype international. The future of what was the merger between Daytona Prototypes of the Grand Am series and the Le Mans Prototype (LMP2) of the American Le Mans era. And the future is very sexy!

Mazda was the first to unveil their DPi… and it is the main reason I’d like to volunteer this event. I want to see this car in person!

But it’s not just prototypes that are an exciting addition to the multi-class racing program that is IMSA. Several new GT programs look very exciting also. Including entries from Acura and Lexus, as well as the addition of Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, and other existing programs that are just now finding their way to IMSA.

This is all pretty exciting news!

I’m so excited I’m contemplating driving down to Florida again next year for this thing. Not once but twice. The Roar before the 24. And the Daytona 24 hour race. In 2016 I drove down to Florida twice. First time in my own Miata for the St. Pete & Sebring pairing and later just for fun in a VW Bug rental. And to be honest I’m really looking forward to do this trip again.

Stay tuned for updates.

Spotter Guide for Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway by Andy Blackmore

I haven’t done these in forever, but thanks to Andy Blackmore and his Spotter Guides facebook page that alerts me every time he creates a new one, I’m happy to share the IMSA Michelin GT Challenge spotter guides for VIR next weekend… where I’ve weaseled my way to finally volunteer.

Yay!

Download the hi-res version of the spotter guide directly from Andy’s site: www.spotterguides.com/portfolio/16imsa/ or do what I do and follow him on facebook:  www.facebook.com/SpotterGuides/

Thanks Andy!

Oh and if you do go to the event, Andy is the official IMSA spotter guide maker, so pick up one of the booklets from the track. I have a whole collection of them now.

Update: Andy also added Lamborghini Super Trofeo and Porsche GT3 Cup spotter guides to the Download list:  www.spotterguides.com/portfolio/16_lambo_st_us/ Now if only he could create the Mazda MX-5 Cup spotter guide for us to have this or next season, I’d be real happy!

Detroit Grand Prix Spotter Guide by Andy Blackmore

With a few days left to go until the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, Andy Blackmore Designed has released another amazing spotter guide for the IMSA events of the weekend.

andy blackmore spotter guides detroit grand prix

Download your copy from: www.facebook.com/SpotterGuides/ or pick up a printed version at the gates during the event, which is what I typically try to do. As a huge fan of Andy I have a whole collection of his spotter guides from various events that I’ve volunteered.

Be sure to pick up an official IndyCar spotter guide too… and as the TransAm fields are growing HUGE! I hope they come up with a spotter guide also… only recently I’ve noticed Pirelli World Challenge has started offering spotter guides for their events, I was lucky to pick one up at Lime Rock (and I’m talking about an actual spotter guide and not the magazine program that they printed at the beginning of the season and distribute throughout the year).

See you in Detroit… a lovely city!

Petit Le Mans 2015 Powered by Mazda Spotter Guide by Andy Blackmore Design

Posting this a bit late, but better than never… check out the outstanding work of Andy Blackmore with his latest spotter guide for the Tudor United SportsCar Championship season finale, the 2015 Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.

I’ve had an amazing opportunity to actually meet Andy Blackmore for the first time during the pit walk at COTA a few weeks ago during the Lone Star Le Mans and made sure to thank him in person for the fine job he does with all his spotter guides. I always leave an event with a printed version as a keepsake. Sharing the link on my blog does two things: 1. shows my appreciation for the work especially since this is a very useful tool while marshaling and 2. promoting the sport to others who may not have known about the series or the cars that race in it. The detailed spotter guides sure provide a wealth of information on everything from cars, to teams to individual drivers.

Thanks Andy!

Spotter Guides for WEC / IMSA at COTA (6 hours of Circuit of the Americas)

The spotter guide for the WEC 6 hours of the Circuit of the Americas is now live on the FIA WEC web site, and could be downloaded free of charge from this link:  http://www.fiawec.com/wpphpFichiers/1/1/ressources/Spotter_Guide/2015/Spotter_Guide_WEC_COTA.pdf

As it turns out this is not an Andy Blackmore Design creation, which is weird. I’ve been a huge fan of Andy Blackmore since day one of my volunteering in Motorsports and have build quite a collection of his printed spotter guides that I’ve saved as keepsakes from various events I worked around the world. Apparently Andy has got competition now. Who’s designing  WEC official guides? Does it really matter? Competition is good!

I will post an update once Andy’s version becomes available, along with his official IMSA spotter guide when it is released in the next few days. In the meantime, enjoy the “official” version from the FIA WEC.

UPDATE 9/14:

Andy Blackmore Design has released his version of the unofficial WEC spotter guide and the official IMSA spotter guide fro the COTA event:

Now besides the obvious: cars facing the opposite direction, can anyone tell the difference between the two versions of the spotter guides?

2015 Le Mans 24h Spotter Guide by Andy Blackmore available for download

Andy Blackmore has made the 2015 Le Mans 24h spotter guide available for download well ahead of the event for those of you attending, watching remotely or marshaling the event to get familiarized with.

Andy’s spotter guides are my absolutely favorite, and even though I won’t be attending the event, I can’t help but recommend others to check out his work for themselves:
