Miataland

There’s a place in Italy I would love to visit on my next Euro Trip: Miataland. Located smack in the middle of Italy if you look on the map and only a few hours drive north of Rome heading in the direction of Florence and San Marino.

Although I’ve been to Italy twice in recent years neither of my trips lasted for more than a few hours. I did a quickie look-see around Milan while transiting between two flights between Madrid, Spain and Stockholm, Sweden and more recently a flight to Brussels, Belgium from New York via Rome. I literally took the opportunity of a layover to rush to city center, do a quick sightseeing and foodie tour and haul ass back to the airport to make my onward connection. However, knowing about Miataland and having already experienced warm European hospitality on my Miata-centric visits to Amsterdam, Netherlands; Cologne, Germany; Liege, Belgium and Paris, France I would put this pilgrimage at the top of my list now.

From the reviews I read online, the videos I watched on YouTube and Miata.net personal member experiences (with photos) I think this is a fantastic concept and one I know could be replicated (and totally should be) around the world. There were Miata collectors I met in Thailand that could certainly pull this off as well as several folks in Australia and definitely here in the US as well. So my hope is to see Andrea’s concept spread and as someone who would love to work in the tourism industry especially from the side of personally leading groups on various international adventures, I would love to market the hell out of this concept to get Miata enthusiasts to support these sort of businesses wherever they spring up.

But back to the topic of Miataland Italy. Andrea is a new friend on facebook that I would hope to interview soon, whether via Skype or in real life (if I get a chance to volunteer at one of the circuits in Italy for one of their amazing Motorsport events) to share his story and promote his business and passion to everyone reading this. I am personally interested in visiting Miataland even when I know I can’t afford the Five Star accommodation on site, but the garage visit and maybe a joy ride in one of the beautiful NC’s would be awesome. This is a very exciting opportunity I want to share on this blog so that other MX-5 and Mazda fans in general could read up on and research for their own trips to Italy. Something new to consider….

I think it would be totally worth it!

Here’s some videos of the concept:

The more I read about Miataland the more I find out how this concept has grown… the car count in Andrea’s collection has increased from 32 to 36 cars more recently featuring everything from NA’s to ND’s and a whole slew of special editions and rare specimens. There are right hand drive cars also for those that desire it. Supercharged and Turbocharged options including a Mazdaspeed.

I haven’t really talked much about the exclusive property and picturesque scenery of the region. That I guess should be experienced first hand. But having met Dutch, German, Belgian and French owners on the previous trip, and knowing about the existence of the “Friends of MX-5” initiative from Mazda Europe, I think this is a fantastic opportunity to go to a new place. Get a unique chance to check out the countryside behind a wheel of a Miata (of a whatever vintage you prefer) and at the same time get a chance to meet with fellow Miata owners that live in Italy or elsewhere in Europe that may be able to organize an event while you are there. I think that’s the coolest part of this whole endeavor, at least for me.

Check out Friends of MX-5 on facebook:  facebook.com/MazdaFriendsofMX5/

So to sum things up, I haven’t been there but I would highly recommend the place to anyone I know. Not only that I’m seriously dying to go and check it out for myself so I could promote it even more to the readers of this blog and the people I meet on my own Mazda MX-5 Miata Road Trips & Adventures!

….stay tuned!

Mazda MX-5: Düsseldorf from Köln (Cologne), via I.L. Motorsport German Miata Tuner and Dinner with MX-5.de Forum Guys

My most epic Mazda MX-5 Miata Road Trip took place this July in conjunction with my Motorsport Euro Trip to volunteer a few races in Western Europe. Second stop was in Germany.

The plan for this stop over was to meet with at least one local MX-5 owner in Cologne before heading to Nürburgring for WEC 6 hour. Lucky for me not one but two owners showed up! David from Cologne and Andre from Dusseldorf who works in Cologne. David was kind enough to drive me to I.L. Motorsport in Hürth, a world famous Miata tuner based in just outside of Cologne. (the other business we didn’t get a chance to check out was Mazda Deutschland which is also just outside of Cologne).

I met David in Deutz across the river Rhine and we proceeded on a short drive to IL, which turned out to be a very impressive facility.

Post Card from the Dutch Miata Road Trip Visit to the MX-5 Sport Specialist

First stop on my three week MX-5 Miata / Motorsport Euro Trip was in the Netherlands at MX-5 Specialist shop near Zandvoort.

Will write more about the visit soon, but for now here’s some photos from the trip.

HUGE thanks to Vincent the local MX-5 owner who drove all the way up from The Hague to give me this awesome tour from Amsterdam down to the beach. Much appreciated Vincent!

Inerestingly enough this is a one man operation, which is very impressive! Also interesting is the little fact that I’m shopping around for new suspension for my car, and on this visit both Bilsteins and Eibach’s were highly recommended.

Friends of MX-5: Europe Where are you?

With just a few days left before my epic Euro Trip, the frustration is setting in. I had high hopes of organizing an MX-5 Mini-Meet-Up in every country I plan to visit on this trip and so far it’s shaping up to be a complete failure. I’ve posted all the invites, I’ve joined the local club forums and so far nothing has been concretely organized. Why?

Mazda has a “Friends of MX-5” marketing campaign for Europe that can be nicely summed up in this promo video:

So the fans are there… plenty of enthusiasts throughout Europe eager to meet up in a group and talk about their favorite roadster. But why am I having such a hard time organizing a small get together especially when things went exceptionally well in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific.  I really don’t know what’s going on in Europe.

Second year attempt, and hopefully not a wasted opportunity.

So for anyone reading this and sensing the frustration in my tone, come out and join me on the trip if you can. My plans are as follows:

f-netherlands July 13 & 14: staying in Amsterdam

f-netherlands July 15 to 17: marshaling at Zandvoort for DTM

f-netherlands July 18 to 19:staying in Amsterdam

f-germany July 20 to 21: staying in Cologne

f-germany July 21 to 24: marshaling at Nurburgring for WEC

f-belgium July 25 to 27: staying in Brussels

f-belgium July 27 to 31: marshaling at Spa-Francorchamps for Spa 24h

f-belgium August 1: staying in Brussels

f-france August 2: staying in Paris, meet-up at Auto Passion Cafe

While in the Netherlands I’d like to visit an MX-5 tuner located very close to the Zandvoort circuit. And while in Cologne I wish to check out IL Motorsport another famous MX-5 tuner and aftermarket parts manufacturer. If anyone could help me out with these two quests I’d be forever grateful.

My other goal is to get a ride in a NC Miata with suspension work done to it. Suspension upgrades are next on my list of things to do for my personal MX-5 (2007 GT PRHT) and it would be very hepful to experience first hand what different options feel like on a similar car. So for anyone that can help me with a ride along I’d be more than willing to buy lunch or dinner.

Please reach out to me via facebook to organize a meet!

Thank you.

Dear MX-5 Miata Friends,

If you find yourself in Paris on Tuesday, August 2nd please come and join myself and a few MX-5 Club France owners at Auto Passion Café in the 14th Arrondissement near Porte d’Orléans Metro stop. I’m hopeful that the French MX-5 owners actually bring their cars but I’m excited for their enthusiasm about this idea of meeting a fellow Miata owner from the other side of the Atlantic.

While my other plans to organize a similar event around Amsterdam, Brussels and Nurburg haven’t gained much traction, the Parisians seem excited, and I’m really happy to see that!

I can’t wait to go there and share some delicious food in the ambiance of a Motorsport cafe… It ought to be a blast!

MX-5 Club France is an active forum in France and french speaking world (including Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland) MX-5 owners that maintain a very flashy web site complete with regularly scheduled events around the country and throughout Europe.

I sent them an e-mail to encourage the club officers to help organize a little get together and they invited me to join the forums (something that I would normally get in trouble for by promoting myself, my event or my web site). But the response has been surprising, and very promising!

I hope the event does materialize and also encourages other Europeans in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to join me as well… it would be so awesome!

Planning my Biggest Euro Trip Yet this Summer: July 2016, Stay Tuned…

I am never going to find a real job… just when I thought I would focus on settling down and searching some meaningful employment on the Gulf Coast of Florida I went ahead and booked my flights back to Europe.

While this is still the very early stages of my planning process I know exactly what I would like to do.

The goal is to marshal the following events:

f-netherlands DTM at Zandvoort, the Netherlands

f-germany WEC 6 hours of Nurburgring, Germany

f-belgium Spa 24h at Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium

The Netherlands/Holland would be my 15th country to volunteer in.

Besides the races I’m really looking forward to exploring Amsterdam which I’ve visited a few times but only for a few hours each time. And another trip to Adenau is in order to have a nice schnitzel at Giulia’s. Belgium is my favorite country in Europe at this time and another trip to Brussels is something I can’t wait to do.

While I failed in the past, I’m really hoping that some MX-5 get togethers in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium will materialize this time around. There are a ton of Dutch MX-5 owners, juts as there are a ton of German Miata owners, and I’m sure we can scrape a few in Belgium too.

So for anyone reading this that are interested, please get in touch, we have a few months to organize a meet up!

Stay tuned for more…
