Global MX-5 Cup Car Rollover Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Video

I don’t usually post about incidents… for one because we’re not allowed to. Especially not to take any pictures. OR share stories on social media about how something happened. But I think this is an important post about what happened because the video is available online and anyone watching it can clearly see exactly what happened so I’d like to share a few comments and concerns that I have as a private citizen, taking my flag marshal hat off.

First I have to give praise to Long Road Racing for building a car that was able to handle such an incident and allowing the driver to walk away unscathed. The roll cage did it’s job and that’s what matters.

Second, I have to say that accidents like this will continue to happen. There’s no way to prevent rollovers or crashes for that matter in general. As long as there is racing, accidents and incidents will happen. What’s concerning though is that this rollover was the second one to happen under the IndyCar series as a sanctioning body of the series, the other video can be seen here:

…and it doesn’t seem that a solution has been created to allow the drivers to get out of the car unassisted.

I thought it was a requirement of most closed wheel (and probably open wheel) racing that a driver must be able to exit their vehicle unassisted in a certain period of time. (fast!) I understand that there are driver’s racing in various series, including in Miatas that may have physical limits (disabilities) but they too must be able to escape the vehicle if a need arises quickly.

That’s not what happened here, for the second time now in IndyCar Global MX-5 Cup series a driver was trapped. And I’m worried about that because that really shouldn’t happen.

I don’t have a solution for this problem.

But I hope and wish one becomes a reality in the near future.

The scariest part about this incident wasn’t so much the rollover. This was my second rollover of the season that came directly at me. The other wasn’t at Barber, even though I worked that race… I was too far to even see it from another station. But I had a twofer in Canada where a similar small car, the Nissan Micra Cup had two cars tumble towards me, spraying the three of us working the station with debris and dirt, and broken glass. One car hung up on the edge of the tire wall to the point that I had to balance it until a flat bed tow truck showed up and propped it up so the driver could get out with the help of medics. Long story short, the rollovers didn’t scare me at all. But I was ridiculously concerned for the driver. I could see the guy moving in the car… but I couldn’t see him getting out on his own. That’s really scary!

Global MX-5 Cup Post-Season Global Challenge @ MRLS the debrief

Welcome to the Playoffs! Who says Motorsports doesn’t have a post-season? Well, the Global MX-5 Cup had finished it’s American racing season in September joining IMSA on track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to determine the championship winner. But Mazda Global MX-5 Cup is literally a Global Series now… There’s a British MX-5 Cup Championship, another elsewhere in Europe, there’s a Japanese MX-5 Cup… and several people from each one of those joined a bunch of Americans at Laguna Seca during the PWC event for another race… the Global Challenge @ MRLS to crown a world winner if you will in the MX-5 world. (he happens to be an American… and he won a bag full of cash for his efforts to win).

The Japanese contingent raced in Winding Road Racing machinery… I wish I could have taken a nice pic of the other car you can barely see in their tent but it was always closely guarded inside… and I missed my chance. The second car actually had some Japanese advertising on it’s sides and front which was very distinctive.

Speaking of Winding Road Racing and several other established American teams, the cars seemed to have changed hands for this event… Slick Sideways racing raced the car above… all the Winding Road stickers got peeled off before it hit the track… along with the PWC TCA stickers it was wearing in the photo above taken on Wednesday during set up.

The fella behind the wheel of this car won the IndyLights championship… and as a Mazda Road to Indy participant found his way into a seat of a Miata… but winning a championship in open wheelers didn’t exactly give him advantage in an MX-5… he seemed to struggle during this event.

The driver o this car nearly ended up in my flat point at Turn 11… I’ll write a separate post about his roll over as there’s a nice video of it happening. He walked away OK but that was a bonehead move that landed him there.

I loved the sticker on the back of this TCB Mazda2 race car… the whole PWC B-spec series are going away, so I’m hoping this fella will find himself behind a wheel of a Miata at a future event next season.

What a fantastic experience this event was!

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Trip Booked in October 2017

I’m really happy to say that the West Coast trip of 2017 has been booked. I had the privilege of participating in my first Miata’s at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca event last year followed by an exciting weekend of Pirelli World Challenge at the same facility, and this year I’m going to repeat the trip. Flights have been booked. Events registered for, the only thing left to do is find cheap accommodation.

It’s exciting!

First, I cashed in some airline miles to actually fly into Monterey (MRY) this time. No more flying to the Bay Area (SFO, OAK, SJC) and driving two hours. Instead I wanted to see the track from the air and there’s no better way than to fly into the Monterey Regional Airport which takes the final approach right over the circuit.

Second, I can’t wait to volunteer again with the organizers of Miata’s at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca event. It was such an amazing opportunity last year I couldn’t pass it up this year:  https://www.miatasatmazdaraceway.com/

Third, PWC is going to be a blast because of a potential race that may actually take place this year. I may sound a little skeptical because the SRO advertised a US round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge a year ago at COTA with a proposed 6 hour race, which never happened, and now the California 8 hour enduro is on schedule but suspiciously very little information is available about it. At the very least I think the PWC event will take place, and last year it was great fun to volunteer it. But as a fan of endurance racing I want to see this California 8 hour race happen. More importantly I love the concept of teams flying in their talent… race car drivers, engineers, crew and renting local vehicles to compete instead of flying all that machinery in with them (from Europe, Asia, Australia, etc.) The concept is cool, there are certainly plenty of PWC and IMSA teams that wouldn’t mind making some money from rentals in this way, but will it actually happen? We’ll wait and see.

I will have a few days of downtime between events, so my goal (besides finding cheap accommodation) is to find something to do from Monday to Wednesday in early October. I’ve done road trips up to San Francisco and down to Saint Luis Obispo last year. This time I’d like to do something different.

PS. as an avgeek I used some of my recently converted Virgin America miles to book a flight with Alaska Airways whom have absorbed VX… lucky for me, I’ll still get to fly Virgin’s A320’s.. and the routing I booked is a little crazy. I’ll do JFK-SFO on a VX A320, connecting to SFO-SAN on a VX A320, my first flight into San Diego, for absolutely no other reason than to connect to a puddle jumper Bombardier Q400 on Horizon Air to do SAN-MRY. It’s going to be fun arriving Monterey on a little propeller plane. On the way back I’ll fly United Express Canadair CRJ-200 MRY-LAX, connecting to a red-eye transcon Boeing 757 on LAX-EWR route. So many dots and lines for my flight map thanks to frequent flyer miles.

Miata’s at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca 2016 is a GO!

Happy to report that I’ll be attending the Miata’s at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this October (10/1 and 10/2). I won’t have my NC with me but the flights have been booked and hopefully my rental car is something cool… as much as I can’t afford this trip I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see this event first hand, check out the big MX-5 car show, and watch a bunch of owners take to the famous track with their Miata’s. I also missed the opportunity to sign the Millionth Miata when it was in Germany at TidM or closer to home at Wayne Mazda on their NYC stop of the tour or the Easton Mazda on the Philly stop. Hopefully I’ll get to autograph it myself.

I’ll also be staying for the week after until Pirelli World Challenge takes to the same race track for their season finale. I can’t wait to marshal at Laguna Seca again… I’ve done the Corkscrew corner before from several different stations and different points of view, hopefully this time I’ll get to experience another vantage point.

Either way it’ll be extremely exciting.

So far I’ve used some frequent flyer miles to fly JetBlue from JFK to Oakland and Virgin America from San Francisco to Newark. The flights weren’t as cheap as I would hope to find them, but about $129 going and $159 back if converted to cash. The car rental from Hertz was similar amount, though I’ll keep checking to get a lower rate. I’ll also try to rely on CouchSurfing to keep my accommodation costs down.

This is going to be a blast and a fine way to end my marshaling season… what an adventure it has been so far!

Miatas at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Bucket List

After compiling a list of all of my recent MX-5 Miata Road Trips I realized there’s one event I really must add to my bucket list: the Miatas at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca happening this October.

Why is this an important event?

I could think of a bunch of reasons… for one, Laguna Seca is a fantastic facility and a home of Mazda Motorsports and Mazdaspeed activities. The Global MX-5 Cup championship opened at Laguna Seca last weekend. California is perhaps the best place to own a Miata or at the very least a very appropriate place to visit, cruising to Big Sur along the PCH with the top down. And the best part there would be hundreds if not thousands of fellow MX-5 nuts in attendance many of whom would drive their cars there while others like me would be able to fly in and possibly rent one.

I’m seriously considering doing this event one year!
