Miata Fiata Radio: New Episode Talking Florida Road Trips with Chris

It’s been a loooooong time since Chris and I did a Miata Fiata podcast episode… at least since January. So now that we’re both back in New Jersey it was time to catch up and talk about our recent road trips down to Florida. Chris had a family emergency requiring him to drive the rental van down to Miami for a few months, while I drove my Miata down to Central Florida to volunteer St. Pete GP and Sebring 12 hour.

Miata Fiata Radio – Episode X Migrating to a New Service, Road Trips to Florida in Miata vs. Rental Cars

We met up in Union City, NJ which is a really cool area overlooking the New York City skyline where Chris’s family has a property. Chris keeps his awesome 1970’s Fiat in a garage there. I got a chance to snap a crappy photo of my Miata with it.

Funny story about that… my car refused to start before heading out to Chris’s house. Why? I don’t know but it would crank and not fire. I immediately assumed that my used ignition relay from eBay I had just installed the day before was faulty. So in the pouring rain I popped the hood and swapped it out for the old one. In the process I cracked the plastic cover on the eBay purchase which was the main reason for getting it in the first place, the plastic cover on my original fuse was broken off. That whole procedure did absolutely nothing, so I broke it for no good reason.

Asked my father for advice and he suggested that water was a factor, possibly creating a poor connection on the battery. So I kept on turning the key until it started and the problem hasn’t replicated since…  shame I handled the situation the way I did. Now I’m going to shop around for a new replacement Ignition relay.

Anyway… have a listen to the new Miata Fiata Radio episode. We’ll be moving all our older episodes from Shout Cloud to Shout Engine to avoid storage limits. And in the process I’ll be amending the name from Miata Fiata Talk to “Radio”

Comments and opinions are welcome. We’d also love to have guests on future podcasts so reach out to get yourself on!

Join Chris, Sakshik, Russ and Dan for our second episode of Miata Fiata Talk discussing mods and maintenance to our cars. The subjects of exhaust, tires, brakes, suspension and oils are covered along with a bunch of other stories as we got sidetracked a million times. Check it out:

As usual suggestions and comments are most welcome!

Miata Fiata Talk: We Started a Podcast! Episode 1 Talks About Shopping for a Pre-Owned Mazda MX-5, Have a Listen!

Great news everyone! A few Miata friends and I started a podcast.

It’s called Miata Fiata Talk and we just recorded our first episode, have a listen:

Miata Fiata Talk: Episode #1: Shopping for a Pre-Owned MX-5 Miata or any other Used Car for that matter.

Participants: Chris, Sakshik and Russ with Dan working the sound/recording system.

Chris owns a 2008 silver NC1 GT PRHT with an appearance package, a Manual Transmission and a bunch of mods. He uses the car for Autocross a lot. Sakshik owns a 2000 NB MT that he also Autocrosses. People already know about me and my 2007 NC1 GT PRHT that is stock and not used for any kind of racing other than Road Trips that get me to the race track. And Dan currently owns a couple of cool cars including a Mini Cooper and a Ford Mustang.

For the very first episode we thought it would be a good idea to introduce ourselves by discussing the shopping experience for a pre-owned Miata, since none of us bought one new off the dealer lot. Occasionally we went way off topic, especially when talking about cars we owned in the past. For Chris it was the Mini Cooper and for me a Ford Crown Vic (of which I had a grand total of ten).

In this episode we also cover a bunch of things to look out to when searching for the Miata you are after. Sakshik had a recent experience buying a Mazda from a used-car dealer. I bought mine through Craigslist while Chris bought his on AutoTrader.com

Chris has a whole check list of things to look out for when shopping for a used car. The rest of us were winging it talking about our experiences. I mentioned the story of how I actually won a bid on a car in Miami, Florida for a good price but then found out that the car had multiple moderate crashes. So I didn’t actually buy it. When it came to test drives I went to see three cars, one MT one AT and one at a local dealer that wouldn’t let me drive it, and finally one I actually bought.

Have a listen. Give us suggestions. Criticism is very welcome!

Stay tuned for more 🙂

(Marshal) Podcast with Rob from SuperSpeeders (SuperSpeederRob)

I would like to do a Marshal Podcast.

I’ve expressed my interest before and I would really like to put the wheels in motion to do it for a few reasons. First, no one else is doing it and I think the marshaling community would benefit from having a podcast about the topic of volunteering in Motorsport. And second, I think it would help with recruiting Automotive and Motorsport enthusiasts to actually volunteer (as marshals), wherever they live.

I asked my buddy Rob from SuperSpeeders YouTube channel fame for some advice about starting a podcast and he invited me to check out how he does it with his SuperSpeeders podcast. Great!

To my surprise when I arrived at Rob’s day job at Gotham Dream Cars in Englewood, New Jersey, Rob invited me to jump onto the podcast and put my 2 cents into the topics he was discussion on his most recent episode, which is available for download on ShoutEngine.com:

http://shoutengine.com/SuperSpeeders/episode-9-fixing-the-broken-traffic-system-and-tra-8727

So what have I learned from Rob?

It’s not terribly difficult to do a podcast. It helps having good equipment to record the sessions in a quiet environment without much background noise. But to get the ball rolling we can easily get started with a free tool like Google hangouts.

The topics to cover are infinite. The time will fly without a doubt. And the more people that participate the more interesting the discussion would be.

Of course in our case, the idea is to bring a couple of people from the marshaling world and have them call in on Google chat from Australia, Brazil, Spain, Belgium, etc. And Rob advised me that issues may arise with buffering based on individual people’s internet connection, etc. So there is potential for bugs.

But the key is to go ahead and start doing it.

Listening back to the podcast Rob recorded I noticed that it takes some practice to answer questions more directly. Finding a way to compress the answer from multiple paragraphs into shorter and more meaningful sentences. I certainly didn’t do that when talking about my marshaling experience veering off into a million different tangents while trying to cover a few topics at once.

I’m looking forward to hearing other people’s feedback on what they thought about this podcast to see what we could use and what we could scrap from the #MarshalPodcast idea.

PS. on the way home I took the Palisades Interstate Parkway and while cruising along at 60mph other traffic was blowing past me like I was standing still… Rob isn’t the only one bitching about the artificially low speed limit. Quick Google search resulted in this Change.org petition from a few years ago that tried to deal with this issue: https://www.change.org/p/palisades-interstate-parkway-police-disband-palisades-interstate-park-police Hopefully there will be some changes in Policing in America in the near future to stop law enforcement departments from shaking down random citizens.
