Hot Wheels 1st Editions Race Cars

Finally had the time to pin my First Editions Hot Wheels mainline race cars I bought off eBay to their new display spot.

Since cars of this vintage don’t have unique blue cards like modern Hot Wheels displaying them as a group is a little easier because they can overlap so only the bubble with each race car is visible. Having done that though I wanted to share some pix from my new favorite HW Collectors web site of what each car looks like out of it’s packaging… I’m using this resourse both to display my cars without cracking open the packaging and as a link to educational material as the site illustrates all available options for each model… most of which I don’t have in my collection. So here we go!

Mercedes-Benz CLK LM aka Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR

The cars that battled the Mercedes and dominated in their own right were Porsche 911 GT1. I bought three different versions, with the #38 Champion livery being my favorite because it accurately represents the IMSA model that raced stateside. Cadillac LMP

Panoz LMP-1 Roadster

I’ve only seen one of these on display at Lime Rock but it looks amazing. Don Panoz founded the American Le Mans Series and it was my favorite before it merged with Grand Am. More here: http://hwcollectorsnews.com/panoz-lmp-1-roadster-s-78mm-2001

Panoz GTR-1

I don’t believe I’ve even ever seen one in person, but on TV it looked amazing battling European and Japanese Le Mans cars of it’s vintage. Saw one of these race at a Historic event at Daytona. The #11 white model accurately represents a Hot Wheels livery race car that really participated in American Motorsport. Ferrari 333SP

Saw this iconic Ferrari at the Daytona Historic racing series 24 hour race. Sounded fantactic. There is a Momo/Lista livery model produced that i should get my hands on. More: http://hwcollectorsnews.com/ferrari-333-sp-72mm-2000

Riley & Scott Mk-III

Saw a variation of this model at Daytona Historics event. Looked similar to the Ferrari 333SP which also raced in the same IMSA series. Shadow Mk-II

At the other end of the race car spectrum, faster than the Le Mans prototypes and GT cars is IndyCar and America is obsessed with it’s Indy 500. Ferrari 360 Modena

The F360 model is famous for a lot of things, I find it awesome because of it’s single make series in Ferrari Challenge appearance. And later as GT3 / GTC race versions. 2019 Hot Wheels Collection Wish List

This year is off to a good start, looking at what Mattel has come out with for both Hot Wheels and Matchbox lines, I’m going to be busy hunting for the cool stuff.

My goal is to snatch all the GT3 race cars that will be out this year. This includes mainline and premium models. And there’s a bunch of each.

I’m especially happy that there will be at least three (3) Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars in realistic/accurate AMG livery. Two color variations in mainline (my favorite colors I should add: baby blue and bright yellow) and premium Open Track Car Culture line (in their prototype gray just the way the car was introduced).

Acura NSX GT3 is another model with multiple offerings both in premium lines.

And finally the Gulf Racing Car Culture lime where I really want to get my hands on the McLaren F1 GTR. And maybe that awesome looking Fiat 600 in iconic Gulf Racing livery.

As of today I’m already the lucky owner of both first color mainlines Cadillac ATS-V.R and Mercedes AMG GT3 models, which fit right in with my growing collection. Oh and I also grabbed a new color of the Porsche 917 LH Prototype too.

There’s so much to chase after, I hope I get lucky and snatch them all.

42nd Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach the debrief

The day after arriving home from the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas in Texas I was back on the plane heading west, this time to California for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Unlike the Texas trip this wasn’t a last minute deal, I had booked my flight a few months in advance though knowing now that I’d be going to Texas the weekend before it would have made more sense to continue on to SoCal from Texas than going back and forth to New Jersey.

As far as the flight goes I was pretty excited about getting a deal but another one came up shortly after I booked mine that made me regret losing at least $75 bux on my deal. I thought I had frankensteined an awesome deal. Direct NY-LA flights were over $100 bux each way. But I found that by booking LGA to Chicago and Chicago to LAX, I could get the trips for $35 apiece. I had padded the trip to give me a few hours between the separate bookings in case something went wrong, but the weather was perfect and everything went as scheduled. On the way back I booked Burbank to New York via San Francisco for $131 bux… which seemed like a good idea because it flew on the day I wanted to fly namely Monday after the event, but a few weeks later I saw United offering $64 each way fares from NY direct to LA, which would have saved me a ton.

Luckily the car rental worked out perfectly. I pre-paid for a car at Dollar for about $120 all inclusive for a week. And when picking up the car I was offered a free drop off at Burbank instead of bringing it back to LAX which saved me a good $20 bux. The car proved really useful around Los Angeles and Long Beach… I was able to pick out a nice Toyota PriusC which after about 400 total miles done only cost me $18 in fuel where Cali fuel runs for $3+ per gallon.

Except for the first night which I spent at a hostel in Venice Beach, I had a neat place to stay in Winchester which is just 10 miles south of Long Beach in neighboring Orange County. The place we got to stay at was organized by my buddy James from Hawaii who invited me to go to Long Beach when we worked together at Bathurst 12 hour.

For the race itself Cal Club SCCA was very welcoming. I got to work turn 8 which turned out to be a really busy station, lots of cars bouncing off the tires in the apex of the turn, many smashing into the concrete just past the tire wall. The thuds of cars smashing into the concrete not only made the cars leave on a flat bed, some left the event altogether… like the Gainsco #99 McLaren.

While the IndyCar race itself was pretty tame and borderline boring, the rest of the series were far more exciting. The celebrity race though was over the top stupid with people recklessly ignoring yellow flags which would have cost someone’s life if they weren’t as lucky. Station 8 was also close to the convention center which meant I managed to go check out what was on display there. Part of the building was used as the paddock for PWC, part was displays for vendors among them was a nice set up for Mazda, which had an Owners Lounge I got to visit and walked away with a nice t-shirt too.

Long Beach, Southern California in general and Orange County specifically is one of my favorite places to visit in the world. It’s like a combination of Singapore and Dubai where you don’t need a passport to visit. I would love to go back again in the future.

Cars & Croissants in Morris Plains, NJ Feb 2016

It’s a great time to be a kid growing up in America! As corny as it sounds when I was a kid, little die-cast model cars were the closest I had come to exotics, sports cars, muscle cars, classic cars, etc. Today, I went to a local Cars & Croissants event at the Dunkin Donuts in Morris Plains, New Jersey and the turnout was incredible. By my count up to two hundred maybe 100 cars were on display for all to see, many rotating in and out during the morning as fresh people came in to see what the fuss was all about.

This was like church for car enthusiasts. A Sunday morning get together in a little suburban strip mall parking lot with cars coming from as far away as Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New York. There were even a few Lambo’s with Montana plates but i’m sure they live in a Jersey garage somewhere and only come out on sunny days.

My goal was to see other NC MX-5’s in the lot… and I found a beauty with abig Flyin’ Miata sticker just before I left the event:
